++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The class pf 2009 flying instructors met as a group for the first time 19 Jan 2010. Belgian Beer Garden was the place chosen because it was sort of central to everybody except Tom.
The Belgian Beer Café Bluestone was established in the grounds of Vision Australia (formerly the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind) in 2002. Housed in an historic bluestone building, it comprises a bar and restaurant reminiscent of a 1920s Brussels bistro as well as Melbourne's biggest and liveliest beer garden. The bar and restaurant's interior features dark timbers, rustic furniture and leadlight windows that open out to the beer garden.
Sam, Dan and I arrived at about 7.30pm and we had our first round of Leffe Brune, a dark colored ale and sat by the benches under the trees in the beer garden.
Then Ash arrived and we adjourned to dine inside the Cafe. Dan ordered us some salt & pepper calamari, pork belly and Provencale mussels steamed with tomato, garlic and basil. Wow, yummy.
We then sampled some othe types of beers: Stella Artois and Hoegaarden White.
Tom arrived about 9pm to join us for a couple of beers. We caught up on how our tests went and what he was doing at Lilydale Airport.
This is a bun ch of fun-loving guys just out for a good time. Ash is still teaching in Moorabbin and the other 3 of us are looking to get a position in Mangalore. So far so good. We thought we might organize another one after we have started our instructions......

Flight Instructor G3 Flight Test
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq05qb02dLO_YDZBXPLiNEeyora-PpPLkgZCm8UCKGJ9iIJld8y2Q70xyqF5bAS8nZbwlXYKkGUyYXto03oZVujscgucQ8rjxjl7pM5BNL0rtWxMzimJlCNOuF5sNR8c6qz16nGPe204z4/s400/Trainee+Instructors+001.jpg)
Yesterday 6th Jan I sat for my flight test.
After umpteen hours of listening to lesson briefs, giving briefs, 53 hours of dual and mutual flight hours on instructional methods and techniques, and 12 hours on Principles and Methods of Instruction ......
And hours upon hours of self study .........
And frustration with the learning environment .....
And delays of sitting for the test since 18 Dec 2009 ......
It was time for the final roll of the dice .....
Dan had already sat for his test the day before I did. He came out firing all cylinders and impressed the hell out of the ATO ..... Darn! He set the bar so high for me!
As it turned out, it was all right.
The oral ground theory lasted about 2 hours. Tough. Lots of "stuff" I could have answered in much better and clearer ways had I been calmer. Then it was time to give my long brief on the lesson on "Climbing", followed by a pre-flight short brief on " Straight & Level"; with plenty of breaks in between to make myself comfortable.
Then it was time to take off to the Training Area on trusty RQM. Set up for a lesson on S&L, followed by a lesson on Instrument Flight, some steep turns, a lesson on Practised Forced Landing, and 3 circuits.
In my opinion it was not my top notch day but I did enough to pass.
Thanks to all my fellow trainees who helped me along in this journey - Dan, Ash, Sam and Tom.
Thanks to our Ground School Coordinator Andrew Derrick, G1 Instructor Greg Smith, CFI Richard Gross and Chief Pilot Joe Ferlazzo.
I learnt a lot. I am grateful I now have that experience.
